Huperzine A is one of the alkaloids contained in a plant known as Chinese club moss. It can be grown in Hawaii, but not in any other part of this country. Huperzine A and huperzine B are two of the chemicals that have been separated from Chinese club moss. Huperzine B is also an acetylcholinesterase inhibitor, but because its effects are much weaker than those of huperzine A, most research has focused on huperzine A. Synthetic forms of huperzine A have been made in chemical laboratories and they appear to be as effective as natural huperzine A in studies. Huperzine A has also been combined or "hybridized" with the prescription drug tacrine (Cognex), an acetylcholinesterase inhibitor approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for treating Alzheimer's disease. The resulting "huprine" combination seems to be more effective at limiting acetylcholinesterase activity than either agent alone. Much more study needs to be done on the possible effects of huperzine A, huperzine B, huprine, and other chemicals derived from Chinese club moss.
1) Improve the efficiency of learning and memory
2) Treat myasthenia
3) Used in senile amnesia and senile dementia
How it works
Inhibits the Acetylcholinesterase enzyme
Supports memory, focus & cognition
Promotes neurogenesis & neuroplasticity
The recommended dosage for Huperzine A is between 100 mcg to 200 mcg for daily use and a maximum of 400 mcg used in the treatment of Alzheimer’s.
While huperzine A will have an effect on its own, stacking it with the right components may yield even better results.
Taking huperzine A in combination with a choline source such as Alpha GPC can increase the amount of acetylcholine in the brain further, enhancing the effect of huperzine A.
Many individuals lack sufficient choline in their diets therefore supplementation can be effective.
A racetam is also a good choice for stacking with huperzine A. Racetams are thought to activate glutamate receptors that are located near acetylcholine receptors. This activity sensitizes the acetylcholine receptors so they are more likely to become activated. Sensitizing the receptors with a racetam and increasing the amount of acetylcholine with huperzine A enhances the nootropic effect of both drugs.
Huperzine A is also often paired with Noopept, a powerful and popular nootropic.
